Horsepower at the Horse & Groom

The calendar says it’s July but I’m tempted to ask for a steward’s enquiry. The rain has meant the bar has been cosier than usual, but that has been fun all the same. But there are some regulars aching to get back out on the water or in their walking boots.
Talking of the bad weather, a few regulars have blamed the arrival of Singin’ in the Rain at the Chichester Festival Theatre, although I think the show arrived some time before the rain. Anyway, from what I hear in the bar and read in the papers, it’s great. Well worth making an evening of it with a pre-or post-theatre dinner at the Horse & Groom.
Hopefully the sun will return for the weekend. If your thirst for all things automobile wasn’t sated by the Festival of Speed, or if you missed out on that weekend, Amberley Museum is hosting its annual Classic Car Summer Picnic on 24 July. They’re showing cars built between 1995 and 1983 and we’re only a short drive away. There’s also a Classic Microcar and Scooter Rally taking place on 31 July.
Also best enjoyed under blue skies is Glorious Goodwood, which starts on 26 July. We’re looking forward to a busy few days and, hopefully, some winners! Our converted barn accommodation makes a great base for enjoying what is one of the highlights of the summer season.

Festival mania at the Horse & Groom

What a weekend! Booked out and busy thanks to the Festival of Speed. Lots of people, lots of incredible cars and, thankfully, lots of sunshine. Our garden has been great – lots of alfresco wining and dining in East Ashling.
I managed to get up to Goodwood. I didn’t pick up that Aston Martin but I did get the chance to get up close and personal with a brand new Porsche 911, spend some time with an amazing 1961 Jaguar E-type FHC and get covered in dust by some rally cars.
Another festival got into its swing at the weekend – the Real Ale and Jazz Festival. It carries on next weekend and a Last Night at the Proms event brings down the curtain on Saturday night. Should be fun – I might be tempted to swap our real ales for theirs for the evening.
Still on the festival theme – West Dean has just announced that it will hold its first ever festival over the August bank holiday. Music, performance, film, cooking and creative making, so the flyer says. We’re just down the road, so for those who aren’t keen on camping, we’ve got lovely comfortable beds and hot showers in our rooms. In the meantime at West Dean, the new Med Fest event takes place 9 and 10 July.
The Chichester Festivities are also under way. I’m eyeing up an evening with John Simpson on 10 July. It would be great to get him back to the pub for a pint and one of Mal’s dinners, but I think I’ll have to settle for a seat in the audience.
