Fireworks, Festivities and the Festival of Speed at the H&G

It must be summer – not because it has started to rain, but because it’s one busy weekend after another. Blues on the Farm and Mark Ronson at Goodwood competed for our attention last weekend, and there’s more to come over the next few weeks.
The Chichester Festivities kick off soon with their usual big bang at Goodwood on the 24 June. The Motown and ABBA music is always good, although not as good as the fireworks at the end. The Horse & Groom is great place to stay for the night to enjoy it, whether you get a ticket or get comfortable on the Trundle.
Talking of live music, the Real Ale and Jazz Festival is just round the corner. Aswad and Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel are among the acts. There’s also a Last Night at the Proms evening, which should be lots of fun.
Also fun will be the Festival of Speed, which opens its doors on 30 June. I’ve got my tickets and I’m looking forward to the show. I always enjoy a stroll around the Style et Luxe enclosure and the Bonhams auction – a very rare 1954 Aston Martin DB2/4 cabriolet is reportedly going under the hammer this year. If I’ve got a spare million on me, I might throw my hat into the ring.
And, if I haven’t, which is the more likely scenario, I’ll reminisce over it and probably a few others with a nice beer and something tasty from Mal back at the pub.

Round the racecourse and round the island at the H&G

That was typical. Pre bank holiday – lots of sun, post bank holiday – lots of sun, actual bank holiday – grey and windy. Oh well, if there was ever an excuse to get comfortable inside (preferably at our bar or in our restaurant) that was it!

At least the skies were blue for Goodwood’s first Friday night racing event with Boy George. The racing season is well under way and the meets are coming thick and fast – Chris Evans is the star attraction at the next Goodwood meet on June 10, while a few days before that Fontwell Park is hosting its Figure of 8 race night on June 8 – free entry if you were born in 1988 or are 88 (I think we’ve got some old boys who qualify). The Horse & Groom is the perfect base for enjoying all this horsepower and music.

Some of regulars are also counting down the days to the Round the Island Race (and praying for good weather!). It’s only a few days away and we’re not too far from the Isle of Wight ferry terminal, so hopping to and fro over the weekend from our converted barn accommodation near Chichester is a great idea.

Talking of getting out, Father’s Day isn’t too far off either. In my experience, Dads like nothing better than a nice pint and a good lunch to celebrate. We’ve got award-winning beer and Mal in the kitchen, so don’t be shy. If they do fancy a bit of pre- or post-meal entertainment, it’s worth checking out the All Revved Up classic car and bike weekend at Petworth Park on June 18/19.
