Sailing, sunshine and superstar DJs at the Horse & Groom

Just as we were getting back to normal after a couple of mammoth weekends, here comes another one. We’ve been loving the sunshine at the Horse & Groom over the past few weeks, so here’s hoping that it sticks around for the bank holiday.

Hopefully the weather will be good enough for lots of our regulars to get out on the water. We’re only a short sprint from Chichester Marina and Itchenor Hard, and a few others, and there’s nothing better than getting out with the sun on your back.

You don’t have to be a pro or even have a boat – sailing trips on a restored Victorian oyster boat, Terror, are going from nearby Emsworth, and evening cruises on the Solar Heritage depart from Itchenor. Regardless of whether you’re at the helm or not, I can’t think of anything better than one of our award-winning beers and one of Mal’s dinners after a day’s sailing.

There’s plenty happening on dry land as well. Goodwood’s Friday night racing season kicks off soon and the Horse & Groom is the perfect base for enjoying one of the June meets, which this year come with the added entertainment of celebrity DJs Chris Evans, Boy George and Mark Ronson doing a set after the races. Tickets are selling fast.

Talking of making the most of our converted barn accommodation and bar and restaurant, the Chichester Festivities are only round the corner. There’s a huge amount going on in and around Chichester, including the annual Motown and ABBA-themed concert and fireworks at Goodwood and talks by the likes of John Simpson, Peter Bowles and Peter Snow.

Racing, Ready Steady Cook and Rocky Horror at the Horse & Groom

Right, so that’s two big weekends done and dusted. We had a great time here at the Horse & Groom in East Ashling. The sun shone, the garden was busy and the drinks flowed – everybody enjoyed themselves.
Goodwood kicked off its racing season over the royal wedding weekend and there’s another meet coming up on 18 May. Bit of a mid-week treat this one. Note to those who like a flutter: the ground is rock hard on the course at the moment. When you’ve finished shouting on your nags, and hopefully coining in the winnings, we’re only down the road for a good meal and last drink or two.
Also, tickets are selling fast for Goodwood’s big three race nights in June with celebrity DJs Chris Evans, Boy George and Mark Ronson – worth making a weekend of with a stay in our converted barns.
If you’re not all eaten out after two indulgent weekends, this is well worth checking out: Cook Food Festival at Chichester College on 18 May. Demonstrations by local chefs, a Ready Steady Cook kitchen, tasting sessions, music, talks and stalls bulging with local produce – lovely!
Talking of food, this is worth booking a pre-theatre dinner with Mal for: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is on just down the road at the Chichester Festival Theatre. Tim Curry is bringing a little A-list glam to it all. Who else remembers him in the Rocky Horror Picture Show?
