The Horse & Groom: get out and about in Chichester this January

Happy new year from the Horse & Groom! We’re just settling down into 2011 after a busy festive period and looking forward to the year ahead. The unveiling of the dates for the Goodwood Festival of Speed (1-3 July) and Goodwood Revival (16-18 Sept) has got us thinking of the future.

The weather may have switched from snow and ice to grey clouds and damp days, but that hasn’t stopped the intrepid cyclists and walkers who use the pub as a starting and finishing post for their journeys into the West Sussex countryside. I know the scenery is the big attraction, but knowing a hearty home-cooked meal and a nice pint are waiting must be something of an incentive!

Talking of getting out and about, you can enjoy a Georgian Chichester walk on 24 January – just get yourself to Priory Park for 10.30am and prepare yourself for a gentle two-and-a-half-mile stroll. It’s one of a series of local HeartSmart Walks.

There’s plenty to do inside as well. Alan Bennett’s brilliant History Boys is on down the road at the Chichester Festival Theatre from 19-29 January, while the impressive Contemporary Eye: Crossovers exhibition continues at Pallant House Gallery, featuring work from famous artists including Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry.

For something a little more active, Fontwell Racecourse hosts its first meet of the year, January Jump Racing, on 28 January. After the Boxing Day racing was snowed off, I should think this one will be well attended.

Of course, the Horse & Groom, with our CAMRA award-winning ales, home-cooked food and comfortable rooms, is the perfect base to enjoy these events and for exploring the West Sussex countryside and coast.
