Christmas time at the Horse & Groom!

Well, the snow and ice are back, so there’s no better time to be safely tucked up in the Horse & Groom beside our fire with a pint of our award-winning ale and something hearty to eat. If you must pop outside, the views are pretty good as we’re nestled at the bottom of the South Downs.

As Christmas is nearly upon us, I thought it would be a good idea to let you know our opening hours, so if you’re visiting friends and family, or just fancy a break from the hullabaloo, you can pop in. We’re open till late on Christmas Eve, 12-2pm on Christmas Day and 12-6pm on Boxing Day, the 27th and the 28th. Normal hours are resumed between 29th and 31st, and then on New Year’s Day it’s 12-6pm.

If you are visiting or want to get out and about, there’s plenty open between Christmas and New Year. Weather permitting, Fontwell Racecourse hosts its inaugural Boxing Day meet this year. The first race round the unique figure of eight course starts at 12.35pm.

The South Downs Planetarium in Chichester hosts its Hubble’s Glorious Universe and All Aboard – A Tour of the Planets shows on the 27th and 28th December for all those who like gazing into the night sky. If you prefer your entertainment on terra firma, the Grange Centre in Midhurst opens its Winter Wonderland Indoor Ice Rink on the 31st.

The Horse & Groom makes a great base for visiting these events, whether you want to pop in for a drink at the bar, have a home-cooked meal in the restaurant or even make a mini break of it and stay in one of our lovely rooms.

The pub is also available for private hire. We’ve got a group making the most of this on New Year’s Eve. If you still have the energy after welcoming in 2011, the Moscow City Ballet is coming to Chichester Festival Theatre in early January. If you need nourishment of a different kind, Chichester’s great farmers’ market is back in town on the 7th.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year! And, hope to see you in the pub.

Get in the Christmas spirit at the Horse & Groom!

So, are we going to have a white Christmas on the south coast? The village looked pretty picturesque in the recent snow, but that’s gone now and we’ve just got lots of frost at the moment. The snow certainly made us all feel pretty cosy here, next to our roaring fire!

One reason I hope the weather holds off a little in the next week or so is The Chanctonbury Chants walk on 19 December – a three-mile walk across the South Downs to Chanctonbury Ring for a carol service with a view. The setting for a seasonal sing-a-long doesn’t get more dramatic than an Iron Age hill fort.

We have plenty of walkers and mountain bikers pop in before and after hearty hikes and rides across Kingley Vale and the South Downs. Kingley Vale is a beautiful place to explore – it’s a national nature reserve and just a short distance away. And there’s nothing better than tucking into a pint and a good meal once you’re done exploring! Here’s our menu so you know what to look forward to!

Talking of Christmas carols, you don’t have to go as far as the South Downs for some seasonal songs. Chichester Cathedral hosts its usual festive carol concerts in the build-up to Christmas, but they’re always popular and some need tickets. Petworth House is also hosting a carol concert, on 18 December.

Chichester City Band is also playing a Christmas concert on 18 December. The concert is taking place at St. Paul’s Church, just down the road, and the band has built up a large following along the south coast, so I think this will be quite the feel-good occasion and a great way to welcome in the festive spirit if you haven’t already.

Christmas isn’t just about singing, it’s also about food! And, Chichester’s Christmas Farmers’ Market is a great place to stock up on some special, locally produced food for the festive break. The market is held in the city centre on Friday 17 December.

All of these festive celebrations are taking place on our doorstep or only a little further away, so the Horse & Groom is a great place to meet up before heading out or to come back to afterwards to relax. You can even make a few days of it and book a room in our converted flint barn.

Of course, as well as our normal menu, we’ve also got a Christmas one to indulge in – have a look here. And, then there is our CAMRA award-winning selection of beers!
