Christmas cheer in East Ashling, Chichester and Goodwood!

December is fast approaching and that means festive fever will shortly be getting into full swing. There are plenty of Christmas-related events taking place not far from the Horse & Groom in East Ashling and, of course, we’ll be putting up the decorations soon.

Nothing is more festive than a Christmas concert and where better to enjoy one than down the road at Chichester Festival Theatre. Its programme of concerts run from 29 November to 4 December and the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines from Portsmouth and Chichester Cathedral Choir will be helping to provide the Christmas cheer.

There are also a couple of big Christmas fairs in the coming weeks that are always well worth a visit. The annual Christmas Fair at Petworth House takes place over the weekend of 27-28 November, while Chichester city centre hosts its yearly Christmas Tree Dressing parade on 5 December.

Also on Sunday 5 December, the Goodwood Breakfast Club’s 2010 calendar takes it usual festive bow out with its Christmas Cracker Special meet which promises some cherished classics and, apparently, Santa’s sleigh at Goodwood Motor Circuit. Entry is free and it’s best to get there early (it starts at 8am).

If you fancy mixing some culture with your Christmas preparations, then the Season’s Greetings: Artists’ Christmas Cards exhibition at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester should be an ideal diversion. Entry is free to this exhibition at what is called the unofficial Tate of the South.

All these Christmas events are taking place on our doorstep, so our pub, restaurant and 17th-century flint barn accommodation is a perfect base to visit one, some or all of them! Of course, as it that time of year, the Horse & Groom Christmas menu is ready to indulge in. Check it out here.

Yes, your landlord and landlady, Mike and Michelle, are now official bloggers. We’ll be blogging about what’s going on at our award-winning country pub as well as what goes on around it – there are always plenty of events taking place nearby as well as a host of popular attractions.

But, first things first: award winning? Yep, the Horse & Groom has been crowned the CAMRA Western Sussex Branch Pub of the Year for 2010. Quite some accolade considering the competition, and it’s not our first gong from the real ale campaigners.

CAMRA promotes good-quality real ale and pubs that serve it, and that’s us. Our cask beers are expertly cared for: maintained in an old-fashioned underground cellar, they are raised directly to the glass using a traditional hand pump. All of this means that your pint tastes like a cask beer really should.

You can read all about our bar as well as our restaurant and 17th-century flint barn accommodation on our new website. Just click here.

We may be heading for winter, but there’s still lots going on locally. Goodwood Breakfast Club holds its penultimate meet of year, entitled Deutsch Marques, on the first Sunday of November. Admission is free to the motor circuit. Getting there early is best.

Elsewhere, Amberley Museum holds its annual autojumble on 14 November, while the Weald & Downland Museum has its Christmas Fair over the same weekend.

All these events are just a short journey away from the Horse & Groom in East Ashling, so should you need a room, a home-cooked meal or just a good pint, or all three, you know where to come.
